Great Find: The NEW Solemates Collections!
categories: favor and gift ideas

It’s probably not a secret that we’re fans of Solemates High Heelers- they provide a practical solution to a common problem (your heels unintentionally aerating the grass, potentially causing a stumble) so you can imagine how excited we were when Solemates sent us some samples of their new collections. Here’s what’s new:

Solemates Outdoor Soloutions (S.O.S.)– Cute packaging conceals a kit that has everything you’ll need in a pinch. They make great bridesmaid gifts and are a welcome addition to bathroom amenity baskets.

SOS Kits_The Solemates

Solemates Shoe Bags– These cotton bags come in 3 chevron patterned colors (Grass, Fog, and Ocean) and protect your shoes while traveling. I used one for my patent leather pumps while traveling recently and was grateful that they did not get scuffed on the trip!

Solemates Shoe Bag

Solemates Body– perhaps the yummiest new addition. I could smell these as soon as I opened my sample shipment- they come in peppermint or oatmeal, milk & honey. The body butter is light, dare I say the texture is like whipped cream, but extremely moisturizing- I’m not quite sure how Solemates achieved this but I’m a fan. It’s a mystery my feet LOVE!

Solemates Body

I would be remiss if I don’t remind you of the original High-Heeler– this little device prevents heels from sinking into grass, getting stuck in cracks, and wobbling on cobblestone (I wish I had brought these with me to Cabo- our hotel had “treacherous cobblestone” all over the property!)

Solemates_High Heeler

Brides, we know you are always searching for bridesmaid gifts and the Solemates products are so worthy of your gifting. Your gals will love them, especially when they are heading down the aisle!

Real Arizona Wedding: Gwen and Greg’s Flagstaff Ranch Wedding
categories: bridal fashions, floral inspiration, real weddings, Wedding Inspiration

Gwen and Greg’s beautiful Flagstaff wedding at Gwen’s family’s ranch is best described as a little bit country charm, a little bit pure romance. Take one look and you’ll know why we had to share it with you!

3 words: vintage, personal, us

Phoenix Bride and Groom_Real Arizona Wedding_ranch wedding_Flagstaff_Hollye Schumacher Photography

Favorite memory: Greg’s favorite is watching me attempt to get my dress bustled, it was quite a situation, there is a great photo of a friend completely under my gown and me waiting patiently with a beer. Mine is spending time dancing to our silly song choices and laughing with Greg on the dance floor with our family and friends. It is also a great memory that I started to say Greg’s lines during our ceremony because I got so flustered and was so excited. It made for some great photos of us laughing up in front of everyone.

Gwen wore 2 dresses and I love her explanation why: I wore a short one in hopes of “tricking” Greg and keeping him from seeing me as I started my walk own the aisle. I also thought it might make the pictures a bit easier to accomplish before the ceremony. I switched back into it late into the reception. The short one was by Melissa Sweet and is called Billie, I plan to wear that one again some day for a fabulous party! My ceremony and reception dress was by Vera Wang, called Diana.

We walked down the aisle to a fiddler playing our favorite song by Old Crow Medicine Show (Wagon Wheel, also our first dance song).

I love the quiet solitude of these images- Gwen and Greg are alone on their wedding day in the most romantic way possible

The wedding day decor can be described as “vintage with a purpose”: My sister created all of the table markers as a tribute to the horses we have loved at the Miller Bros. DK Ranch (my family’s ranch for generations). The names on the tables are the names of the horses we have known. We seated my grandfather at the table named for his horse growing up, Black Eye. Greg and I sleep under the framed names from our wedding table (Lady and Trouble, very appropriately). My sister also created a truly amazing guest book from an old copy of a book about Princess Grace called Once Upon a Time, she cut out pages and replaced them with pages to sign and old family photos of our families. My mom also put in a lot of hard work, she collected over 100 vintage table settings for the guests of mismatched china and vintage silver…

The plan for our wedding was to make it as personal and meaningful as possible…We did not want to make any decisions “just because” or base our plans on what we thought was the norm. We wanted an outdoor wedding, but wanted to steer clear of too country a vibe, although boots were encouraged!

Favorite things:

My favorite thing about Greg is how sweet he is. He always puts me first and worries about how I feel, he is sweet and romantic in an understated way that just comes from his nature.

His favorite thing about me is that I am his best friend and that everything is always better when were together.” It is the greatest thing ever to be able to be married to your best friend.”

Phoenix Bride and Groom_Real Arizona Wedding_ranch wedding_Flagstaff_Hollye Schumacher Photography (10)

The couple chose a family style meal of pork, fettucini alfredo and homemade breads that were all served on passed platters, like a family dinner; not only is the clear-top tent gorgeous for the views during the day, it also has such a cool nighttime effect too.

Arizona Wedding Vendor Spotlight: Babydoll Weddings Hair & Makeup
categories: health and beauty, Meet Our Friends, Trends, Wedding Resources

I begin today with a cautionary tale: I made the critical mistake of hiring an amateur makeup artist for my wedding who actually told me she did not “believe in covering up blemishes because it just draws attention to them”…of course I ended up looking like I did my own makeup. I was shiny the whole day and the eyeshadow colors chosen did not accentuate my eyes (my best feature) at all, and you can bet my blemishes made themselves known.

So, if you want to look and feel beautiful on your wedding day, heed my warning: do not rely on someone who moonlights as a beauty professional! Without question, you want someone who does this full-time, a team who can doll you up exactly as you need to be for a day that focuses on you, whether you want it to or not. Don’t forget, there’s a camera pointed right at you most of the day!

Meet Babydoll Weddings Hair & Makeup– a team of pros who you can trust to make you look and feel your best on your wedding, led by owner and stylist Sabrina:

What makes Babydoll Weddings Hair & Makeup different?

Teamwork, Education and Professionalism. I have built such an amazing team of people… From the first email or phone call brides make to us, we strive to respond within 24hrs and make sure they have a quote and our contract in hand. As a recent bride myself, my biggest frustration in planning was people getting back to me. April is our Bridal Liaison and her sole job is to make sure communication is happening with each and every bride.

Keeping up with the latest hair and makeup trends in the wedding business is also something we pride ourselves on. We meet once a month and devote 2 hours as a team to practicing, sharing and learning current hair and makeup techniques. You’ll see us travel to California and around the valley to attend hair and makeup shows/expos to make sure we are keeping up with the industry. This ensures our team can deliver any style brides or wedding party members are looking for. We are also able to provide great ideas about trends they may not know about. Having a team of talented stylist ensures we can handle small or large parties.

One of the most important things that sets us apart from other beauty service providers is all of our stylists are licensed cosmetologists or aestheticians.

What can a bride who lives out of town do to make sure she ends up with a wedding day look she loves (assuming she can’t squeeze in a trial)?

We have many brides in town and out of town that choose not to have a trial. Pictures are the key for us in creating the look that a bride wants to achieve. With magazines and Pinterest there are so many great ways to pick the perfect hair and makeup looks. We ask that brides email us some pictures in advance so we can put them in their folder and their assigned stylist can have a reference.

What trends in hair do you see for the upcoming Fall wedding season and what do you see going “out” quickly?

I predict a lot of the vintage and pin up look for this Fall. Also, many brides are choosing to wear their hair down instead of the traditional updos. Incorporating a braid or texture into any style is very popular as well.

Going out of style are large hair accessories. I see a lot of smaller and shorter veils for fall.

What advice do you have for a bride who doesn’t wear makeup?

Makeup is a necessity in photos for your special day, especially nowadays with all the Hi Definition photography. Makeup does not have to consist of a heavy look- using the right techniques in contouring and highlighting someone’s face is the key. The goal is to bring out a bride’s best features and minimize the ones she may not like.

Do you have any services for grooms?

Absolutely. It’s more common for brides to get their makeup done, but men want to look just as good on their wedding day. We offer makeup services for grooms as well as tattoo cover ups. Airbrush makeup is the best for grooms as we can cover that stress pimple and give them an even complexion and they won’t feel like they have any makeup on.

Thank you Babydoll Weddings Hair & Makeup- we can’t wait to see more of your beautiful brides!

Babydoll Weddings Hair & Makeup travels to you for your wedding hair and makeup primping but of course you can find them here as well: 5114 E. Southern Ave, Suite #161 Mesa, Arizona 85206/(480) 433-0716/http://www.babydollweddings.com

Engaged: Elicka and Jon
categories: Engagement

Elicka and Jon’s engagement session is the perfect combination of sweet and sexy- you’ll love the multiple locations, fun vibe and vibrant colors. Oh,and there’s a proposal story for the books…

How did you meet?

We met on a Caribbean cruise in 2009. I was on the cruise with 60 friends as part of my senior year college spring break and Elicka was on the cruise with her mother as a college graduation gift. To say that meeting my future wife on this cruise was the last thing I expected is an understatement. I guess the saying is true that you find love when you’re not looking for it.

Ideal date night: Since I work for the airlines, we’ve been blessed with free flights. This is something we’ve been able to take advantage of by flying to some great places. On some weekends, we’ve taken quick 1-2 day spontaneous trips to different cities in the U.S. just to explore. So I’d say my ideal date night would be exploring a new city with her.

An elaborate proposal plan eventually led Elicka and Jon to Camelback Mountain where Jon had several friends on the trail give Elicka long-stemmed roses tagged with loving words. He ended up getting down on one knee and proposing, Elicka said yes, and the proposal date continued. Jon made plans for them to go to their favorite lunch spot, get a vase for the roses at an art festival, paint together at the Brush Bar, take a limo ride to the Orpheum Theater complete with a show, and enjoy dinner at their favorite restaurant, Top of the Rock. Phew! Jon documented it all so they could share it with their families (see it here if you need some sweet ideas!).

Favorite things:

Jon: The way she makes me feel when I am around her. I’m able to be 100% myself, and everything just feels right. We are able to do the absolutely most boring thing together and make it a blast. I couldn’t think of a better person to spend the rest of my life with. She is my best friend and soul mate.

Elicka: Jon makes me laugh constantly but I’d have to say my favorite thing about him is his heart. He is very kind, thoughtful, and he truly cares about the welfare of others. He teaches English to refugees and is a member of StreetLightUSA’s Social Media board.

Jon grew up a die-hard Steelers fan and Elicka was a Cardinals cheerleader so they made sure to get  a few fun shots showing their love of the game:

Real Arizona Wedding: Danielle and Craig
categories: cakes and sweets, fabulous reception sites, floral inspiration, real weddings, Wedding Inspiration

Danielle and Craig, who met in California but headed to Arizona for their wedding weekend, planned a classically romantic desert wedding at Superstition Mountain Golf Resort. Soft champagne and warm neutrals were paired with subtle pink and navy to make the day a beautiful celebration of love.

Phoenix Bride and Groom_Arizona Wedding_Southwest Wedding_rustic_John Schnack Photography (1)

I couldn’t help but be intrigued by these images of Craig; Danielle tells us: Craig had wanted the new iPad, but he wanted to wait on purchasing one with all of the wedding expenses. I knew that this would be a great gift but needed to find a way to romanticize it. I waited until the day of the wedding to write a special note to him using one of the apps. My words were along the lines of letting him know he’s my best friend and how much I adore our love story and couldn’t wait to begin a new chapter as husband and wife.

Phoenix Bride and Groom_Arizona Wedding_Southwest Wedding_rustic_John Schnack Photography (2)

Favorite Moment: The first look allowed Craig and I an opportunity to be alone and to share our thoughts and words of excitement. It was such a special moment that just seemed to stop time as everything around us afterward happened so quickly, and before we knew it- it was all over.

Danielle’s dad made this arch for the ceremony- so sweet!

The property is so versatile- I  love how this image shows barely a trace of the desert but the next one shows the grandeur of the surrounding landscape; Danielle’s family stayed on-site at the Ranch House where they were able to spend time together the whole weekend; the couple even had their rehearsal dinner at the Ranch House the night before.

The decor was a blend of romantic country and desert chic; the lush boxed flower arrangements softened the room and added subtle hits of color; the BBQ dinner menu included tri-tip, ribs, chicken, corn, beans, coleslaw, & green chile cornbread (yum).

Favorite Thing: How well we work together. Our communication has always been right on par which makes for a very easy relationship.

Slightly obsessed with this all white cake- the texture and design are just so gorgeous!

Kristan and Noel took a day out of their very active lives to slow down and celebrate what makes them unique as a couple (besides keeping up with their chocolate lab Roxy, Noel plays ice hockey, baseball, basketball, and snowboards; Kristan enjoys rollerblading, hiking, and surfing!).

Initially, they struggled with their vision for their wedding day decor- they had many ideas but had a hard time making concrete decisions. This is where Some Like it Classic Wedding & Event Design came in! Kristan and Noel hired Amina Michelle to help them focus on the overall look and design for their day.

The beautiful result as described by Kristan: the color palette of purple, charcoal, and ivory created a regal, yet sophisticated ambiance. We incorporated clean, sleek lines throughout our wedding by using a chevron pattern on our invitations, signage, and wedding cake.

3 Words: Sophisticated, Fun, and Memorable

Favorite Memory: We unanimously have to say our “first look” because it was a chance for us to be alone and enjoy each other before all the chaos and excitement of the day and night started.

Phoenix Bride and Groom_Arizona Wedding_Session Nine Photographers_Desert Wedding_purple_grey_Kristan and Noel (4) Phoenix Bride and Groom_Arizona Wedding_Session Nine Photographers_Desert Wedding_purple_grey_Kristan and Noel (5) Phoenix Bride and Groom_Arizona Wedding_Session Nine Photographers_Desert Wedding_purple_grey_Kristan and Noel (6) Phoenix Bride and Groom_Arizona Wedding_Session Nine Photographers_Desert Wedding_purple_grey_Kristan and Noel (7)

The Details: We got engaged in Sonoma, California, and wanted to subtly incorporate wine into our wedding. During the ceremony, instead of lighting a unity candle or mixing sand, we exchanged letters to be opened on our anniversary and placed them in a custom-made wine ceremony box with a bottle of Silver Oak, which is our favorite winery.

For the reception, we had custom-made wine bottle labels as the table numbers. The wine bottle labels incorporated the same purple chevron design as the invitations and other signage.

We worked with our Officiant to personalize our ceremony which included stories of how we met, showed our personalities, and described the little things that we love about each other. We wanted to give the impression that our Officiant was a good friend of ours rather than someone we only met a couple of times.

The reception was well-planned and included amenity baskets and personalized signs for the restrooms, a flip-flop basket for the ladies to kick-off their heels, and a live photo booth for our guests to take home a personal keepsake from our wedding. Our guests dined on a meal of filet and salmon while our DJ played up-tempo lounge music rather than jazz or classical music to maintain the unique and fun vibe (who doesn’t like beats while you eats right?).

We included some traditional elements into our reception such as the garter and bouquet toss, and the father-daughter and mother-son dances. For a fun twist on late night snacks, we provided our guests with croissant and english muffin breakfast sandwiches (because who doesn’t like breakfast as a late-night snack?).

Phoenix Bride and Groom_Arizona Wedding_Session Nine Photographers_Desert Wedding_purple_grey_Kristan and Noel (14) Phoenix Bride and Groom_Arizona Wedding_Session Nine Photographers_Desert Wedding_purple_grey_Kristan and Noel (15)

The Honeymoon: We spent 6 nights in Maui and stayed at the Sheraton Black Rock on Ka’anapali Beach and island hopped to the Big Island, where we stayed 5 nights at the Fairmont Orchid on the Kohala Coast. We chose Hawaii since we knew it would offer the best balance of relaxation and adventure.

If you could change one thing: {Try} not to stress out too much on the day of the wedding, and {remember} that sometimes you have to relax and improvise. It was the culmination of all of our hard work and we still wanted everything to be perfect. At one point during the day, we looked at each other and came to the realization that no one would even notice if something was out of place, or the MOH’s dress was a different shade of purple, someone from the pool crashing the ceremony, etc. Any of the hiccups that may have happened during that day is what will make it memorable for us.

Notes from the newlywed nest:

Noel is very calm, level-headed, and go-with-the-flow, which is a complete opposite of me (Kristan). Whenever I get worked up or stressed out, he is always there to bring me back to center and put things in perspective. He is my voice of reason, my support system, and my better half.

Kristan is smart, practical, and very meticulous in everything she does. However, she also has a fun, spontaneous side, and is not afraid to let her hair down! My wife is loving, selfless, and puts me and her family before her. Above all else, she makes me who I am and I cannot imagine my life without her.

Kristan and Noel, thanks for sharing your day with us and congratulations!
