categories: destination weddings and honeymoons, fabulous reception sites, Meet Our Friends, reception ideas, rehearsal dinner spots

When it comes to wedding venues, Arizona has it all: wedding venue styles range from desert landscape to golf courses to sprawling resorts to urban downtown venues and Renaissance Phoenix Downtown Hotel should top your “favorite wedding venues in downtown Phoenix” list.

Located in the heart of downtown Phoenix, Renaissance Phoenix Downtown Hotel offers breathtaking rooftop views, a chic urban setting, a truly unique atmosphere and a staff who desires to make your wedding day all you hoped it would be.

We chatted with Senior Catering Sales Executive Amie Dignan about why couples will want to consider Renaissance Phoenix Downtown Hotel for their big day:

What makes Renaissance Phoenix Downtown perfect for weddings? Skyline, at The Renaissance Phoenix Downtown Hotel offers a very unique urban wedding venue that is unmatched by any other space in the valley. Skyline is a 10,000 square foot roof top terrace with soaring views of the downtown Phoenix landscape.  Surrounded by historic and contemporary buildings it is perfect for a one of a kind wedding experience.

Can couples bring in their own vendors or do you have a specific list you work with? We offer a list of preferred vendors which are all great partners to the Renaissance; however, couples are welcome to use any vendor of choice. The Renaissance will supply all food and beverage.

Sunset ceremonies on Skyline are breathtaking as the sunlight reflects off the surrounding buildings.

We also have several Urban Gardens on Skyline creating a unique space in downtown. Our downtown location is ideal for weddings with out-of-town guests; we are walking distance or a light rail stop away from great restaurants and entertainment options for guests wanting to make the wedding into a weekend get-away.

What are the things about the property that make it a fabulous place to get married? Our staff and service is like no other, we receive constant accolades from our guests as we make them feel at home. The Renaissance is in the top 10% of Phoenix Hotels on Trip Advisor and is listed as number 7 for service within the Renaissance Brand. In fact, the hotel was just named the Renaissance Hotel of the Year for 2015!

What do you see couples doing with the venue as far as decor and design that you are really loving right now? Bistro lights and a color wash of up lighting has really enhanced the space.  Skyline boasts several lounge sets and couples are incorporating the furniture into the reception and enhancing them with fun pillows and table-scaping.

Colorful Arizona Wedding Inspiration: Arizona Biltmore Styled Shoot
categories: bridal fashions, cakes and sweets, fabulous reception sites, floral inspiration, for your ceremony, from the consultants, reception ideas, Wedding Inspiration

Here at Phoenix Bride & Groom, we pride ourselves on sharing the most inspiring styled shoots, real weddings, and great finds with you, our loyal readers, but one thing you may not realize (but probably totally appreciate) is that we only share what we believe is achievable by real couples planning their weddings. Completely over the top inspiration shoots are fun to look at and dream about but when we publish a styled shoot, it’s because the design is inspiring and the details are within reach of Arizona’s couples planning weddings. Today’s styled shoot (which of course utilizes the talents of local Arizona wedding vendors) is one of the most colorful Arizona wedding inspiration shoots we’ve seen and we’re sure you will adore it!

A bright color palette, thoughtful details, and an iconic setting await!

From Victoria Canada of Victoria Canada Weddings & Events: This colorful styled shoot was inspired by the iconic stain glass at the entrance to the Arizona Biltmore Resort.  Frank Lloyd Wright was the consulting architect for the building of this historic resort in 1928 and it is known as the “Jewel of the Desert”.  I styled the shoot to have vibrant jewel tone colors and patterns that reflected the famous Biltmore Block.

Colorful Arizona Wedding Inspiration Details:

-Cake designed with stained glass motif to reflect a clean, modern and colorful feel

-Floating “Stained Glass” as a ceremony backdrop

-Laser cut wood stationery elements that are normally created with paper- this reflects Frank Lloyd Wright’s famous dedication to nature inspired design

-Acrylic ghost chairs with custom Biltmore Block vinyl appliques

-Color Blocked Bouquet

The bride’s gown was “Lana” by Willowby- it features a statuesque profile and lace panels that marry modern and vintage beautifully

When Victoria Canada designs any event, whether it be a wedding, ceremony, brunch, or rehearsal dinner, she always includes special touches and design details that tie the entire event together. For example, not only does the signature cocktail have an adorable Frank Lloyd Wright style stir stick, it also complements the color palette of this colorful Arizona wedding inspiration shoot.

Lindsey and Matt’s Downtown Phoenix Wedding
categories: cakes and sweets, floral inspiration, real weddings, reception ideas, Wedding Inspiration

Phoenix Bride and Groom_Downtown Phoenix Wedding_Mike Olbinski Photography (1)

Lindsey and Matt are both from Arizona so even though they currently reside in Texas, they returned to the Arizona desert they love so much for their downtown Phoenix wedding. The lovely photos definitely reflect this couple’s fun attitude and their love for our desert city.

Lindsey recalls: We wanted our wedding to reflect who we are and our styles. We both love minimalist design, industrial architecture, vintage-inspired style, and the desert. Also, with the wedding being soon after New Years Eve, we wanted to have a fun atmosphere for our guests, as well as pull from the colors of that holiday of metallics, black, and white.

Lindsey is a designer so she designed the wooden cactus magnet Save-the-Dates (so cool, right?) and worked with a laser-cutting company in Dallas. For the invites, I wanted to integrate artwork that my grandpa had created in the 1940s of downtown Phoenix into the design. I worked with a letterpress printer in Dallas to create the invites, and my mom lovingly lined the envelopes and did calligraphy.

One of our favorite parts of the wedding was seeing our adorable nieces and nephews as ring bearers and flower girls, whose vintage-inspired outfits were meticulously selected by the MOB and MOG.

Phoenix Bride and Groom_Downtown Phoenix Wedding_Mike Olbinski Photography (10)

Looking back, what was your favorite moment of the day?

As I was waiting to walk out to the ceremony with my Dad, I peeked through the curtain and was overwhelmed at the sight of our family and friends that had joined us that day. Matt and I couldn’t believe the amount of love that we felt throughout the day, and were so grateful to be able to celebrate with everyone.

Phoenix Bride and Groom_Downtown Phoenix Wedding_Mike Olbinski Photography (11) Phoenix Bride and Groom_Downtown Phoenix Wedding_Mike Olbinski Photography (12) Phoenix Bride and Groom_Downtown Phoenix Wedding_Mike Olbinski Photography (13)

Downtown Phoenix Wedding Details: I wanted to have a minimalist, desert look to the flowers. Megan Carollo of Flower Bar put together a mix of succulents, driftwood, and white floral that was just stunning. My favorite element was the escort card table that combined moss, candles, driftwood, and candles- it was the centerpiece of cocktail hour.

Phoenix Bride and Groom_Downtown Phoenix Wedding_Mike Olbinski Photography (15)

Downtown Phoenix Wedding Details: Regarding the cake, we wanted something that had a geometric, Art Deco-era feel. Pixy Cakes created a black, gold, silver and white cake that was not only beautiful but also delicious. (I would also like to point out that the groom kept his promise to his mom to not smash the cake in the bride’s face!).

The menu also uniquely reflected Matt and Lindsey’s experiences: Matt and I wanted a menu that reflected places we have lived and food we love. We both grew up in Arizona and therefore love Mexican food. We met while in college in New Orleans and wanted to have southern food inspired by NOLA. And we live in Texas now, and also wanted some good ol’ fashioned American comfort food.

When something at the wedding goes wrong, and something always does, you want to have a team of professional vendors to back you up. Lindsey tells us how the sparkler exit almost didn’t happen: Somehow during the hustle and bustle of the day, half of the sparklers, the lighters, and the bucket to extinguish them in did not make it to the wedding venue. After some initial panic from my Mom and me, Alex from BTS made a call and magically came up with replacement sparkler materials, which was amazing of her. The sparkler exit happened as planned! Although, if I could do it over again, I would have slowed down… because Matt and I basically sprinted through it and only got a few pictures. But it was still a fun moment, regardless.

Congratulations Lindsey and Matt and thank you for sharing your downtown Phoenix wedding with us!

Personalize Your Wedding with Flowers
categories: floral inspiration, for your ceremony, reception ideas, Tips and Advice, Trends, Wedding Inspiration

We’re always looking for ways to help couples infuse their personalities into their weddings and May 1st- also known as May Day- is the perfect time to explore how you can personalize your wedding with flowers. We’re not talking about simply choosing your flowers for your wedding, we’re talking about connecting the memories that are evoked when you see and smell certain flowers to your wedding day decor. It’s been fun for us to explore this idea with our Elite Circle florists and we can’t wait to inspire you with their expertise!

Ways to Personalize Your Wedding with Flowers: Table Tops Etc.

Are there any flowers that, upon seeing and/or smelling them, trigger memories for you?

When I was a little girl of 8 years old, I would collect lavender lilac from the big bushes outside my bedroom window and fill the vases for my mom in the kitchen. They were haphazardly displayed and browning on one side but I didn’t know they weren’t so perfect. I just loved the smell and the look! Massachusetts lilac bloom in the month of May so it was always a sign for me that the snow and our harsh winter was over. The sun was coming out and Spring was here! So in planning my wedding day, the first thing I did was order lilac for my bouquet. The fond memories of my childhood and the significance of that one flower were so powerful for me. Luckily, I was married in a month when I could get it! I remember the calm that I felt just before walking down the aisle when I stuck my nose in my bouquet and smelled the lilac. Immediate relaxation and happiness! So as a florist for the past 24 years, I think of that day and try to guide my couples to choose flowers that trigger fond memories. Weddings are stressful and hectic. I can help couples feel a calming and a sense of happiness by choosing a flower that will do this for them.

What are some ways you’ve used flowers to personalize a wedding?

The bride’s dad, an Arizona cotton farmer, brought me a bundle of freshly picked cotton on the pod for her bouquet. She grew up on the farm so this was a sweet way to pay homage to her childhood (bouquet image not available but here are two examples of cotton in bouquets):

We are designing an all orange snapdragon vase for an Oregon bride whose grandmother had a large snapdragon bush in her yard- it will be placed at her ceremony table to bring back fond memories of her grandmother who has passed.

Texas girls love yellow roses (it’s the state flower)!  One of my brides had a beautiful all white bouquet and then we tucked a single “yellow rose of Texas” in the underside of the back of the bouquet.  She loved the smell and memories of her home state!

Phoenix Bride and Groom_personalize your wedding with flowers_yellow rose

One bride’s grandmother collected African Violets (they’re VERY hard to maintain) but we searched all over for small 3” pots to place at the cocktail hour in memory of her grandmother!

Ways to Personalize Your Wedding with Flowers: Your Event Florist

Are there any flowers that, upon seeing and/or smelling them, trigger memories for you?

Lilacs hold a special place in owner Kevin Reed’s heart as they remind him of his late grandmother. His grandparents owned a farm in Indiana and his grandfather planted lilac bushes all over the farm because his grandma loved them so much. Now, every time Kevin smells lilacs he remembers all of the time he spent with his grandmother on their farm.

What are some ways you’ve used flowers to personalize a wedding?

Incorporating personal and meaningful florals, decorations and/or traditions into your wedding is always a wonderful idea. We love it when a bride wants her bouquet created with a loved one in mind because she will remember it forever and it also is so much more meaningful to her. Our advice for brides and grooms planning their wedding is to try to incorporate as many personal touches as possible so that your wedding reflects you as a couple and will be even more special for years to come.

Once we embarked on this story, the Phoenix Bride & Groom staff’s floral memories came flooding back as well and we realized how powerful scent is when it comes to memory. We hope you’re inspired to personalize your wedding with flowers that trigger good memories so your wedding can feel extra special. Clearly, our Elite Circle florists know how to help you with that!

Wedding Hair and Makeup Advice from Babydoll Weddings
categories: Grooms, health and beauty, Tips and Advice, Trends, Wedding Inspiration

I begin today with a cautionary tale: I made the critical mistake of hiring an amateur makeup artist for my wedding who actually told me she did not “believe in covering up blemishes because it just draws attention to them”…of course I ended up looking like I did my own makeup. I was shiny the whole day and the eyeshadow colors chosen did not accentuate my eyes (my best feature) at all, and you can bet my blemishes made themselves known.

So, if you want to look and feel beautiful on your wedding day, heed my warning: do not rely on someone who moonlights as a beauty professional! Without question, you want someone who does this full-time, a team who can doll you up exactly as you need to be for a day that focuses on you, whether you want it to or not. Don’t forget, there’s a camera pointed right at you most of the day!

Meet Babydoll Weddings Hair & Makeup– a team of pros who you can trust to make you look and feel your best on your wedding, led by owner and stylist Sabrina:

Wedding Hair and Makeup Advice: What makes Babydoll Weddings Hair & Makeup different?

Teamwork, Education and Professionalism. I have built such an amazing team of people… From the first email or phone call brides make to us, we strive to respond within 24hrs and make sure they have a quote and our contract in hand. As a recent bride myself, my biggest frustration in planning was people getting back to me. Michelle is our Bridal Liaison and her sole job is to make sure communication is happening with each and every bride.

Keeping up with the latest hair and makeup trends in the wedding business is also something we pride ourselves on. We meet once a month and devote 2 hours as a team to practicing, sharing and learning current hair and makeup techniques. You’ll see us travel to California and around the valley to attend hair and makeup shows/expos to make sure we are keeping up with the industry. This ensures our team can deliver any style brides or wedding party members are looking for. We are also able to provide great ideas about trends they may not know about. Having a team of talented stylist ensures we can handle small or large parties.

One of the most important things that sets us apart from other beauty service providers is all of our stylists are licensed cosmetologists or aestheticians.

Wedding Hair and Makeup Advice: What can a bride who lives out of town do to make sure she ends up with a wedding day look she loves (assuming she can’t squeeze in a trial)?

We have many brides in town and out of town that choose not to have a trial. Pictures are the key for us in creating the look that a bride wants to achieve. With magazines and Pinterest there are so many great ways to pick the perfect hair and makeup looks. We ask that brides email us some pictures in advance so we can put them in their folder and their assigned stylist can have a reference.

Wedding Hair and Makeup Advice: What trends in hair do you see for the upcoming Fall wedding season?

For this fall I predict a lot of hair being worn down with curls. Brides are looking for that long sophisticated look with lots of shine so extensions will be a necessary option for many. For those brides wanting their hair up, unlike years past, the artful “messy updo” is on its way out. You’ll see very smooth and very put together updos, keeping with the romantic and sophisticated bride.

For hair accessories, longer veils with smaller hair accents are going to be a big hit. Also, I suggest that all my fall brides find a more fun and flirty hair piece for the reception, something with feathers.

Wedding Hair and Makeup Advice: What advice do you have for a bride who doesn’t wear makeup?

Makeup is a necessity in photos for your special day, especially nowadays with all the High Definition photography. Makeup does not have to consist of a heavy look- using the right techniques in contouring and highlighting someone’s face is the key. The goal is to bring out a bride’s best features and minimize the ones she may not like.

Do you have any services for grooms?

Absolutely. It’s more common for brides to get their makeup done, but men want to look just as good on their wedding day. We offer makeup services for grooms as well as tattoo cover ups. Airbrush makeup is the best for grooms as we can cover that stress pimple and give them an even complexion and they won’t feel like they have any makeup on.

Wedding Registry Ideas: Julia Knight Collection
categories: entertainment, favor and gift ideas, Wedding Inspiration

Adding a few items from the Julia Knight Collection to your registry is one of our favorite wedding registry ideas because there’s a wide range of pieces that can complement your newlywed nest no matter what your entertaining style is. Plus, the handcrafted artisan quality means you’ll treasure these pieces for generations to come.

Julia Knight offers 16 named collections and within those collections are several color and metal options. From the “Queen Bee” Collection: It’s subtle yet significant. The iconic golden bee makes her cameo appearances in our Queen Bee Collection. Resting with an air of entitlement on a stunning honeycomb pattern, the setting gets its buzz from a busy Parisian rue.

Wedding Registry Ideas: A bit of whimsy can be incorporated into your entertaining collection and beachy or tropical themed serving dishes are a great way to lighten things up.

From the “By the Sea” Collection: The lore of the sea draws on a bountiful catch of myth and mystery. Shells and sea creatures tell an adventurous tale at tableside – a spread of textural beauty amidst the salty, misty fog.

From the “Exotic Tropics” Collection (you know the pineapple motif is huge right now in everything from clothing to weddings, right?!)

From the “Diamond” Collection: Manhattan Upper East Side? Chicago Gold Coast? San Francisco Nob Hill? You get the picture. Pull out the stops and feel the allure of elegance from our Diamond Collection bar and serveware. It leaves nothing to the entertaining imagination. Just add guests and go.

Wedding Registry Ideas: Registering for items that are both gold and silver allows for versatility in your entertaining and mixing metals is a sign of a truly modern couple’s style.

From the “Florentine Gold” Collection: Host an evening of opulence in Florentine style. This collection graces the scene with classic, golden luxury – inspired by the arched design of a 24K gold bracelet handpicked in a Firenza market.
