Elite Circle Wedding Florist in Arizona | Butterfly Petals
categories: floral inspiration, Meet Our Friends, Trends, Wedding Inspiration

To say that Mandi, owner and principal designer of Butterfly Petals, is creative or talented doesn’t quite do her work justice. Mandi is a visionary. She doesn’t do what everyone else does—she works with materials that are completely unexpected and somehow infuses her passion for desert inspired floral into every single thing she touches. By the time you’re finished reading this, you’ll want this well-known Elite Circle wedding florist in Arizona to design for you, we just know it! But first, you simply MUST get to know Mandi and the philosophy that drives Butterfly Petals…

What do you think makes Butterfly Petals a stand-out wedding florist in Arizona? In a world where creatives are encouraged to only design to a brand, I decided I love flowers too much to limit myself to one style or look and feel. Yes, we’re known for our rustic desert work, but we’re extremely flexible and can design around anyone’s preferred look and feel. We have a huge inventory of vases and containers to suit everyone’s tastes whether it’s rustic, elegant or modern. I have a great team around me with their own design skill set and we can always pull something awesome together which fits our clients’ needs. We will always be known for our desert designs and I think that’s because I’m an Arizona native and can’t help myself. I have to play with cacti and textures and they seep into my work when left to my own devices.

You’re always a bit ahead of the trends and often use unique elements in your design so we’re dying to know: where do you get your inspiration from? I pay attention to design trends outside the wedding industry. If you see pillows show up in Target with palm leaves, you’re bound to start seeing inspiration shoots for weddings featuring cool tropical greenery and backgrounds. I have a giant pile of home decor catalogs clogging my mailbox, I even see the design trends on shows like Fixer Upper on HGTV. As the wood finishes change on home furnishings, the rental companies start to carry similar pieces in their inventory. It’s gone from Farm tables to upscale Pottery Barn style dining…all in the wedding world. I also try to follow international designers. The boho trend started to take off in Australia and New Zealand where they have access to all the gorgeous protea we’re starting to see in bridal bouquets. Dress designers started adding bell sleeves and everything felt a little 70s/hippy gypsy. Lo and behold, the brides stateside started taking note and suddenly the rental companies are carrying peacock chairs and oriental rugs and we’re designing with pampas grass and protea. Following bridal blogs is helpful as well but once a trend starts it can be a plague of sameness. I always want to be on to the next thing for my clients while still keeping my designs desert-friendly and funky.

What do you want clients to know about their own wedding before meeting with you in order to get the most out of your initial consultation? Know the overall look and feel you want to achieve. Don’t worry too much about zeroing in on exactly what flowers are going to be in each vase and container– instead think about how you want the wedding to feel. Think about your guests walking into the reception space-do you see rustic tables with long flowing garlands or round tables with linen and tall stately centerpieces? Think big picture and we’ll zoom in and fill in those details. It’s also key to know your venue and an approximate idea of how many guests you’ll be inviting, the size of your wedding party and your needs for ceremony, etc. We want to get the initial quotes as accurate as possible so you know what you’re in for.

How do you approach/work with clients that aren’t “flower people”? Most people aren’t flower people. Or at least, most people don’t fill their entire day with thoughts of flower types, seasonal availability, colors, etc. Don’t worry too much about knowing flowers–we’ll fill that in for you. Know the overall look and feel you’re going for and we’ll help you with the rest. If you just don’t think you want a ton of flowers or never envisioned lush floral design at your wedding–that’s ok too. Flowers add a lot but I’m very practical in my approach. Everyone is going to want something unique at their wedding or celebration and sometimes that means very clean and minimal floral.

If you could give couples planning their weddings your top piece of advice when it comes to flowers, what would you say? Pinterest is a great start but keep in mind, that like most social media, it’s now run by algorithms that feed you results based on what everyone else is pinning and drawn to. They’re pulling gorgeous photo-ready weddings from Style Me Pretty and other inspirational blogs that don’t always feature the most affordable floral designs. You’re also getting the same results 100 other clients are getting. Instead of pinning 85 photos of peony bouquets and finding out they aren’t available or are extremely expensive the time of year the wedding occurs, I’d rather my clients start with broad strokes–look for pretty bouquets in your color scheme. Know what you like or don’t like about them–whether it’s the shape or the way the colors balance with each other. It gives us the flexibility of working with mother nature to come up with designs that work in our desert climate as well as designs which suit every look, feel and budget. It also gives us a little creativity. This is what we do after all, and a little trust in your designer’s skills will give you a gorgeous result every time.

What floral trends or new floral design options are you seeing that you’re excited about? Color is coming back. We’ve been dancing around the same shades of blush, gold or peach and mint for the last several years. Gorgeous weddings every time but there’s something refreshing about a client who wants to use deep plums and fuchsia or a client who wants strong yellows. It allows us to work with floral we haven’t been using in the last few years like exotic orchids or calla lilies. Bold flowers that make a statement.

Advice from Wedding Photographers | Phoenix, Arizona
categories: Meet Our Friends, photography, Tips and Advice, Wedding Inspiration

Everyone who gets married wants to love their wedding photos—even the couples who aren’t all that comfortable in the spotlight of the lens—so we asked the best photographers we know for their advice. It just makes sense to ask for advice from wedding photographers, doesn’t it? Here’s what Arizona’s Elite Circle photographers have to say about how to have a fabulous wedding day (which, if you hire a great photographer, will result in fabulous photos!):

Christina DePoy of DePoy Studios:

Hire your wedding photographer ASAP and get to work on your timeline before your wedding invitations go out.

No matter what happens on your wedding day—the cake does not show up, your dress does not fit, you have to kick a groomsman out at the last minute for being too drunk, or the DJ is super late—just remember that you are there to celebrate your love for one another, with the people who love you the most.

The best wedding photos are the most authentic ones—the ones that capture real moments throughout the day. The ones that bring them back to the wedding day and evoke that emotion all over again; Be yourself and let the day unfold as organically as possible.

Don’t make your wedding day all about the photos. Let your photos be all about the moments of the wedding day.

Stuart Thurlkill of Eyes 2 See:

If you want to have amazing photographs make sure to book an engagement session. By having a trial run you are more relaxed and confident on your wedding day.

Warm smiles come from a full heart and intimate words; Share with all your guests how your heart is feeling.

Tracy Battaglia of  Fully Alive Photography:

Be in love! Gaze into each other’s eyes, even when everyone is looking. Trust you did everything to your best ability, and on your wedding day, just be free. Truly be present.

Meet Our Tempe Mission Palms Giveaway Winners!
categories: fabulous reception sites, Giveaways and Contests, Meet Our Friends

When you enter one of our giveaways, you just might get more than you bargained for…case in point, not only did Mitch and Meghan win our Tempe Mission Palms giveaway (valued at $1,250), they also got a mini-photo shoot with Fully Alive Photography’s Tracy Battaglia!

Here’s our winning couple:

Tempe Mission Palms giveaway winners _Phoenix Bride and Groom_Arizona wedding_Fully Alive Photography

Meghan and Mitch, who met while being inducted as members of the University of Arizona’s Mortar Board Honor Society, have been planning their wedding for almost two years and are thrilled that the actual wedding day is less than 2 months away. The fact that they had time to schedule this shoot with us and look so cute proves that they’re ready!

Kellie Mendoza from Tempe Mission Palms and our very own Dawn Peterson presented the gift certificate to the couple; Tracy Battaglia of Fully Alive Photography was on site to snap the photos.

Tempe Mission Palms giveaway winners _Phoenix Bride and Groom_Arizona wedding_Fully Alive Photography

The Proposal: In 2015, I wanted to impress Meghan with a surprise proposal. As a result, I conspired with two of Meghan’s best friends, who were living in Raleigh, NC at the time. I made it appear as though these friends had bought Meghan a surprise trip to Raleigh as a birthday present. A day after Meghan arrived, Meghan and her friend toured around Durham while her other friend picked me up from the airport. Meghan watched an Arizona Wildcat basketball game at a local restaurant and then was taken to a bright red bridge in the Sarah P. Duke Gardens on the Duke University Campus. While her friend pretended to take Meghan’s picture on the bridge, I came out from the bushes and surprised Meghan by getting down on one knee.

Tempe Mission Palms giveaway winners _Phoenix Bride and Groom_Arizona wedding_Fully Alive Photography

We are most looking forward to enjoying the day with our close friends and family. Having a two-year engagement has allowed us (mostly Meghan) to be more detailed in wedding planning. Because of this, there is less to worry or fret about during the actual wedding day.

We love how Phoenix Bride & Groom magazine incorporates real bride and wedding stories. These stories have helped us be more proactive in planning. We also love the recommendations and focus on local vendors. These recommendations have given us a starting place in piecing together our wedding. Finally, we really enjoy the photography!
