Desert Botanical Garden Engagement Shoot | Sara & Bobby
categories: Engagement, photography, Wedding Inspiration

Did you know that one of our very favorite wedding venues, Desert Botanical Garden (DBG), is also one of our very favorite engagement session locations? See, we kind of adore our desert plants and terrain and DBG is THE place to get our cactus/mountain/flower fix. Apparently cutie pie couple Sara and Bobby like it too because they chose to have their engagement photos taken there! Explore this Desert Botanical Garden engagement shoot with us…

So there’s a few reasons we were drawn to Sara and Bobby’s Desert Botanical Garden engagement shoot- of course the location is one reason- but do you SEE them? They are seriously the cutest, sweetest, gushiest couple! And then to top it off, their outfits are perfection! We love how the blues and reds pop against the neutral desert color palette. But we know there’s more to Sara and Bobby than their adorableness so we asked them a few questions:

How did you meet? We lived near each other and went to the same high school but never really knew each other. Back in February 2014 my friend Travis invited me, and his brother Geno invited Bobby, to go on a snowboarding trip in Telluride, CO and that’s where we got to know each other.

How did Bobby propose? In December 2016 we went on another snowboarding trip in Telluride with Bobby’s family and on our way down a run Bobby pointed out a spot off in the distance and said that’s where we were going to meet up with our group. Being the slowest one on the mountain I was the last one to get there, everyone was sitting so I sat too to catch my breath. Bobby scooted over to me and said, “I got something for you”, pulled out the ring, and asked, “Will you marry me?” It took me a minute to say, “Yes!” because I instantly started crying (happy tears!). Everyone else took pictures of the whole thing and his youngest sister Bailey yelled, “Yay! I get another sister!” He kept the ring for the rest of the day so I wouldn’t lose it in the snow.

The photo of Bobby tucking Sara’s hair behind her ear is one of our very favorites by Elite Circle photographer Fully Alive Photography- it’s a caring and natural gesture that adds a touch of authenticity which we thoroughly enjoy in engagement sessions!

Tell us about the wedding! Since we met in Telluride and got engaged there, we thought it would only make sense to have the wedding there too! Our date is September 21st, 2017 at San Sophia Overlook. We are most looking forward to spending such a special occasion of our lives with our closest friends and family with the incredible view and scenery that San Sophia has to offer.

What’s your favorite thing about each other?

Sara: I love that I know he will always be there for me. I sometimes let stress and anxiety get the better of me and he knows exactly what to say to make me feel like everything is going to work out and be okay. I’m always learning from him and he makes me laugh every day. I know I can count on him no matter what.

Bobby: My favorite thing about Sara is that she understands me completely. She is always there to support me with anything that comes up in our lives. I know that no matter what she will always be there for me. I find myself excited every day when I think about how soon she will be my wife.

How did you choose Tracy/Fully Alive Photography and DBG for your engagement photos? Bobby’s sister Lindsey found Fully Alive Photography at the Phoenix Bridal Expo. With work, school, MRI clinicals and planning the wedding I was feeling a little overwhelmed so for my birthday, Bobby offered to handle setting up engagement photos for me. Tracy teaches photography classes at the Botanical Gardens so she suggested doing our shoot there and that sounded like a perfect idea! The scenery was beautiful and the pictures turned out great. She was easy going and made us feel very comfortable during the whole thing too.

We feel like Sara and Bobby just know exactly what to do in front of the camera so if you’re ever not sure how to act during your engagement session, feel free to consult these photos!

What’s your ideal date night? Our ideal date night is just to spend time together. But our go-to date night is usually an Asian-fusion restaurant called Tottie’s. He took me there for our first date and we’ve spent a few Valentine’s day dinners there too. Plus he can get his sesame chicken and I can get my sushi fix!

We enjoyed getting to know you, Sara and Bobby (and adore your e-session style). Thank you for sharing your Desert Botanical Garden engagement shoot with us and congratulations on your upcoming wedding in Colorado!

RISTYLE Down the Aisle: When a Stylist Gets Engaged
categories: Engagement, Meet Our Friends, Wedding Inspiration

Have you ever wondered what it’s like for a person who works in the wedding industry to plan their own wedding? Well, our special series, “RISTYLE Down the Aisle” is your chance to find out! Join us for a very special peek into how newly engaged stylist, Risa Kostis of RISTYLE Consulting, approaches her wedding planning. You’ll find her to be stylish (of course), insightful and completely endearing. We begin the series with When a Stylist Gets Engaged…enjoy!

(Photographer: Round Lens Photography)

It’s surreal to imagine myself FINALLY in a white dress tearfully saying I do. For years I’ve had the pleasure of doing for others on their wedding days and I certainly never dreamed my passion for all things bridal would bring me to where I am today…nor did I think an editorial campaign I was hired to work on would play such a huge role in my long-awaited engagement story.

My fiancé Jason and I couldn’t be more opposite. He prefers Patagonia and saves his Seven jeans strictly for ‘fancy’ nights out with me, so when I come home from styling on set to show him my behind the scenes images, it’s very rare to capture his attention for longer than a quick minute. This wasn’t the case after a perfect day of shooting the cover and fashion pages for the Winter/Spring issue of Phoenix Bride and Groom last September. It was one of the most important shoots of my now 3-year career as it was my first bridal cover and a chance for full creative control from top to bottom. Knowing that, he patiently sat through my photos and stopped me abruptly when I got to one in particular. The ring.

Here’s the ring front and center from our cover shoot- it’s pretty gorgeous!

When I described how much I fell in love with this ring from The Estate Watch & Jewelry Company, and how I’d seen it before for another project I worked on, he had to see it. It wasn’t at all what I ever thought I wanted in an engagement ring, but there was something so unique about it. When I showed it to him he gave me a look that told me it was probably never going to happen.

When a Stylist Gets Engaged _Phoenix Bride and Groom_RISTYLE_Round Lens Photography

As we talked more about our future and getting engaged, twice over the next couple of months I visited the jewelry store to chat with the owner and see ‘the ring’. The second time I went in…it was gone. I called Jason to tell him the devastating news and he told me, ever-so-politely, to let it go.

Shortly after the release of the Winter/Spring issue of Phoenix Bride & Groom, I was thrilled to see that special piece of jewelry made it onto the cover! But it was bittersweet…that ring still held a special place in my heart.

With our winter getaway to Mexico coming up, Jason broached the subject of engagement rings. He said,“I’m confused about what kind of ring to get you. Can you introduce me to your friend the jeweler?” And he’s right…I’m impossible to shop for, but I was so confused…hadn’t he already been thinking about this? I made the introduction to the jeweler via text and felt immediate relief.

In Mexico, we settled into Estrella Del Mar overlooking miles of private beach and the most perfect view in the world. During a walk on the beach, we talked about our goals for the year and walked hand in hand. The next thing I knew, he was telling me how much he loved me, and with barely any time to respond, he was down on one knee. It was all a blur until he asked me, “Are you going to say yes?” Of course I blurted out a teary, “YES!”

Then he told me to look down at my finger. I looked down to find THE ring on my hand. Apparently he and Jill from The Estate Watch & Jewelry Company were in cahoots ever since my magazine shoot. The alleged text introduction, the fake sale of the ring to some other lucky woman…it was all part of his secret plan to give me the ring of my dreams and give me one more reason to cherish the memory of working with the team at Phoenix Bride and Groom.

Katie & Marc’s Outdoor Engagement Session in Arizona
categories: Engagement

outdoor engagement session in arizona _phoenix-bride-and-groom_fully-alive-photography_katie-and-marc

Sometimes you hear a couple’s story and you just know they’re extra special. Katie and Marc’s story is one of those stories. Fully Alive Photography, an Elite Circle photographer who seems to have a knack for bringing out the most natural and pure beauty in people, photographed the couple for their outdoor engagement session in Arizona and we love it!

For today’s post, we’re mostly going to let the couple tell their story because we wouldn’t do it justice.

How did you meet? We met working at Starbucks at Rural and Baseline in Tempe in 2002…there weren’t any sparks at that point. I wasn’t interested in a relationship (much less Marc) because I had my heart set on going overseas to serve people living in poverty and do humanitarian work. As for Marc, he was really content as a single. And while he may have had some interest in me, he knew I wanted to go overseas and he certainly didn’t want to get in the way of that. Before I left the US, Marc gave me his email address so I could send him my newsletters. So for years, our only communication was me sending out mass email newsletters from the Middle East and West Africa.

I returned to the US in 2013. I knew it would be a difficult transition coming back to the US, but I thought I’d be fine. I had already spent years traveling the world and living in other countries as a single woman. How hard would America be? But I had no idea what I was in for. Marc, on the other hand, knew. He had seen how other people struggled when they came back from serving overseas. So he committed to pray for me—even though we hadn’t seen each other in nearly a decade.

So as I navigated the traumatic terrain of reverse culture shock, heartbreak, and loss over the next year, Marc faithfully prayed for me and emailed me encouragement in the form of written prayers, stories from his life, Bible verses, and links to songs. I can’t tell you how many times I would read one of Marc‘s emails in which he shared just the thing I needed to hear or confirmed just what I was sensing from God. I could tell Marc was special, and that he had a really close relationship with God. And that was attractive. I eventually got up the nerve to email and tell him I was interested in him—romantically—and that if it was mutually, he should do something about it!

outdoor engagement session in arizona _phoenix-bride-and-groom_fully-alive-photography_katie-and-marc

What is your favorite thing about each other? Katie: For me, it’s what I first found attractive in him: his obedience and faithfulness to God. Marc: I most like her capacity to feel deeply.

outdoor engagement session in arizona _phoenix-bride-and-groom_fully-alive-photography_katie-and-marc

Katie and Marc’s Outdoor Engagement Session in Arizona took place at Tempe Center for the Arts and Tempe Town Lake- the couple says the locations represent many things about us: our love for Tempe, music, and modern architecture.

The Proposal: The couple went out for a fancy meal to celebrate their 2 year anniversary but ended up being stuck for hours on the freeway due to an accident and eating at Chipotle instead (they are having Chipotle cater their wedding as a nod to this special anniversary!) . So, the next day, we met up to walk through a large city park. Marc was determined to find the perfect spot. So for the next two hours, we wandered the park as he insisted we needed to find the right spot to sit down so he could stretch. It was a legitimate excuse. He was recovering from a mild running injury, and I knew he’d been instructed to stretch multiple times a day.

Did I know that a proposal was coming? Well, I did think, Maybe he’ll propose. I knew it was bound to come at some point over the next few months. But honestly, I didn’t think this was the day. So I took his insistence on finding THE right spot as a challenge. After all, my guy is really particular when he knows what he’s looking for. We would most certainly find it. And we did find it. Well, nearly. We sat down in front of a parking lot underneath a dying arbor and he started telling me how thankful he is for me and about how much we had grown over the past two years, and I thought, “Oh, he’s being so sweet for our 2 year anniversary!”

Then, after a pause, he said, “Nope, this isn’t the right spot.” It was true. I was kind of afraid that spiders might start falling from the dead vine above us. So we backtracked about 50 yards to a nearby fountain in the sunshine and THAT was the perfect spot where he simply said, “You want to marry me, right?” “Are you asking me to marry you?” I asked. And he had the biggest smile on his face as he said, “Yes!” and got down on one kneed and formally asked.

Later, he said, “It may not have been very romantic, but I hope it was memorable.” Memorable, yes. And it WAS romantic!

How did you choose Fully Alive Photography for your outdoor engagement session in Arizona? Choosing Fully Alive Photography was one of our very first decisions in the whole wedding planning process (technically, our first decision was cupcakes; second was deciding on Fully Alive Photography). We had seen a lot of Tracy’s work and we loved her style and artistry. As we’ve gotten to know her, we’ve also seen how naturally she creates beauty and fun all around her. We knew we were hiring the best photographer who would help us relax and have fun during our photo sessions, as well as really capture our personalities as individuals and as a couple.

Ideal Date Night: Sunset on the patio of Postino’s Annex—me drinking a white wine and Marc eating a bowl of fresh potato chips while listening to a retro playlist.

We love the quiet strength Katie and Marc exude. There’s no frills, no fuss. Just a closeness and love that is sort of…ethereal (the gorgeous glowing sun that Tracy expertly captured doesn’t hurt either!).

OK Natasha and Crosby, we see you. We adore you. We need to redo our own engagement photos… ha ha!

When Elite Circle photographer Tracy Battaglia from Fully Alive Photography sent us this gorgeous outdoor engagement session in Arizona- at Desert Botanical Garden and Papago Park to be exact- we had some serious engagement session envy. These two have it all- a fun demeanor, a good dose of sexiness, the most perfect desert backdrop with pops of color and a very cool sense of style. Enjoy every juicy minute of this one readers!

The couple met through a dating app, chatted online and eventually met in person. It’s been 2 years since that fateful meeting and here they are, engaged and getting married in December!

Desert Botanical Garden is such a lovely setting for an outdoor engagement session in Arizona because it has all kinds of winding paths, desert flowers and cacti and interesting architecture as well.

Favorite Things:

Crosby: How she can make me smile every single waking second. We have such a similar taste of culture and lust for adventure, and she’s really opened my eyes to a lot of awesome stuff that I don’t think I would have experienced so fully.

Natasha: He is the best partner to journey through all the winding paths of life with; his passion for life is infectious. He helps me see the brighter side of the darkest of situations, and never fails to make me laugh.

With the warm sunlight and cool shady spots, Fully Alive Photography took full advantage of the perfect weather for this outdoor engagement session in Arizona

We’re a whole lot in love with the quiet tenderness captured in this photo

Ideal Date Night: Good food followed by live music at a dive bar, maybe skee-ball.

The Proposal: Crosby proposed to me on 12/26/15, which also happens to be my birthday. He, along with my closest friends, arranged a circus themed birthday party for me at their house, but kept the surprise of the proposal. Crosby even had my best friend from California come down to be a part of the event. I was dressed as the ringmaster, and he in full vintage clown makeup. He filled the room with so many of my dearest friends and actually dropped to both knees while proposing. Needless to say, I said yes immediately! I was totally surprised and spent much of the night in awe of how much love filled that entire home.

How did you choose Fully Alive Photography? When I was first planning my wedding, one of my closest friends and I went to a bridal expo in downtown Phoenix. I was immediately struck by how gorgeous Tracy’s photos were; so many beautiful compositions and colors. After I had the opportunity to experience her warm and genuine demeanor in person, I was sold.

Congratulations Natasha and Crosby and thank you for letting us feature your engagement session- we can’t wait to hear about the wedding!

Engagement Session Tips from a Photographer
categories: Engagement, photography, Tips and Advice

Just like parents on their child’s wedding day, we’re pretty darn proud of our Elite Circle wedding vendors. The Elite Circle is a group of wedding vendors in the Phoenix, Arizona area that surpass the ordinary with their talents, level of expertise and customer service. Whenever you see a styled shoot, wedding, or engagement session online that you absolutely adore, chances are at least a few Elite Circle vendors are involved so when we saw an article with engagement session tips from a photographer, we knew the advice was sound.

Eyes 2 See Photography writes about why you should have an engagement session and we pulled a few tips for you and some of our favorite engagement photos taken by Eyes 2 See. Embrace the love!

Engagement Session Tips from a Photographer: Connections matter! Engagement sessions help you and your photographer get to know each other. As a photographer, it is important for us to get to know how to best photograph you. We want to see how creative you are and teach you how to look great in front of the camera. As a couple, take time for an engagement session to help you practice for the wedding day. We promise it will help you open up, look great and feel comfortable with your photographer.

Engagement Session Tips from a Photographer: Decompress, go on a special date. Wedding planning can be stressful. Engagement pictures are your chance to do something fun with your partner. Make it a date! We suggest you take a few minutes to plan a perfect day together and have your photographer document the adventure. These candid moments of you making a meal together, skiing, or exploring the city will be more memorable than just a headshot. Your options are only limited by your imagination. Our photographers and videographers love to get creative with ideas. Let us know if you need help brainstorming your engagement session/date.

Wedding Registry Ideas: Julia Knight Collection
categories: entertainment, favor and gift ideas, Wedding Inspiration

Adding a few items from the Julia Knight Collection to your registry is one of our favorite wedding registry ideas because there’s a wide range of pieces that can complement your newlywed nest no matter what your entertaining style is. Plus, the handcrafted artisan quality means you’ll treasure these pieces for generations to come.

Julia Knight offers 16 named collections and within those collections are several color and metal options. From the “Queen Bee” Collection: It’s subtle yet significant. The iconic golden bee makes her cameo appearances in our Queen Bee Collection. Resting with an air of entitlement on a stunning honeycomb pattern, the setting gets its buzz from a busy Parisian rue.

Wedding Registry Ideas: When considering what to register for, don’t forget to register for some classic pieces that you can use year round that serve several purposes- a gorgeous cake stand can hold a variety of foods or even be the base of a beautiful flower arrangement.

From the “Classic” Collection: Timeless and timely, our Classic Collection is a premier presentation of clean-line sophistication and mother-of-pearl allure – perfect for spontaneous gatherings or top-shelf soirees.

Wedding Registry Ideas: A bit of whimsy can be incorporated into your entertaining collection and beachy or tropical themed serving dishes are a great way to lighten things up.

From the “By the Sea” Collection: The lore of the sea draws on a bountiful catch of myth and mystery. Shells and sea creatures tell an adventurous tale at tableside – a spread of textural beauty amidst the salty, misty fog.

From the “Exotic Tropics” Collection (you know the pineapple motif is huge right now in everything from clothing to weddings, right?!)

From the “Florentine Gold” Collection: Host an evening of opulence in Florentine style. This collection graces the scene with classic, golden luxury – inspired by the arched design of a 24K gold bracelet handpicked in a Firenza market.
