Every year, the Pantone Color Institute releases it’s highly anticipated “Fashion Top 10 Colors” report and this year’s report included Lilac Gray. Inevitably, Pantone’s top 10 colors make their way into wedding decor and since this color is a beautiful and distinctive neutral that subtly plays into many wedding color palettes, we’ve been seeing it a lot! Today we share some lovely lilac gray wedding inspiration to get your wedding inspiration juices flowing.

Pantone’s description of this color: As in most any season, the need for neutrals arises. Essentially a basic, the subtlety of the lilac undertone in, Lilac Gray, adds a distinctive edge to this classic gray shade.

Real Arizona Wedding: Rob and Kristin at Arizona Biltmore
categories: fabulous reception sites, real weddings, reception ideas, Wedding Inspiration

Kristin and Rob wed at the historic Arizona Biltmore in Phoenix where the building itself was an inspiration for the wedding decor. Kristin is a professional designer and knew the Pantone “color of the year” was Tangerine Tango and part of what they love about the Biltmore is the unique grey block, so the color scheme of grey, tangerine, and ivory emerged.

The Arizona Biltmore was also a perfect fit for the large number of out of town guests- the couple wanted them to experience some Arizona history, their love for the desert, and their passion for architecture. So exactly 4 years after their first kiss, Kristin and Rob said “I Do”!

I really love the bright orange that was included throughout the wedding details- it makes it all so happy!

Sweetness: Officiant Mike Kennedy helped Kristin and Rob create a special moment for each of their mothers by taking time during the ceremony to honor them with a rose; he also suggested they write love letters to each other that were placed in a box that will be opened on their anniversary.

Kristin had a special bouquet wrap that was made by her grandmother; it featured special family heirlooms representing women from both the bride and groom’s families- grandmothers, great grandmothers, great aunts, and many others who had passed away or were unable to attend the wedding. It was her way of including them and honoring them.

Many of the tangerine, grey and ivory details were lovingly made by the couple and their friends: Rob and his brother made the centerpiece boxes, Kristin and her sisters designed, purchased, and assembled the candy buffet table, and the custom handmade bridesmaids clutches were made by a previous coworker and fellow interior designer friend of Kristin’s. Regarding taking on DIY projects for your wedding, Kristin says: If you need help with a craft, ask for it- you’ll be surprised how many of your friends will pitch in their time to make it happen!

It makes sense that Kristin and Rob’s Favorite Moment was a result of the reception layout. Kristin explains: Lindsay Russell, the catering sales manager with the Arizona Biltmore, was extremely patient with my desire to lay out the tables in the Aztec Ballroom unlike any wedding or event they had in the space. Having a bride who practices architecture and interior design added an extra challenge to Lindsay’s plate, but she accepted the sketches of the seating layout for both the ceremony and the reception- all based off of a sunburst pattern- and made them happen. One of our favorite moments of the day was sitting at the sweetheart table as dinner was served- at the head of the ballroom but looking out onto a field of the sunburst tables, and we could see everyone. As people talked and ate, we would have moments of eye contact and a smile, and there we were hand in hand, sharing this amazing moments with all our guests. No words needed to be spoken, and many raised a glass, but those moments of brief shared eye contact with our guests was a touching treat that I know we had not expected. It is a time that I remember as being one of my favorite moments of the day.

The Honeymoon: Our first vacation together as friends was a trip to San Diego. Years later, when we were dating and wanted to get away, we’d head there! So when Rob wanted to propose, he booked a surprise trip to San Diego and got my girlfriends to take me for manis/pedis before the trip and shopping for a fun outfit. It was only fitting that we also spent our honeymoon there. The wedding itself was so big it literally took us 4 or 5 days to actually relax! I think we are really happy that we just did a low key  and relaxing honeymoon instead of planning anything elaborate. The wedding is the elaborate part- the honeymoon should just be for fun and to wind down together and let it all sink in!

Wise Advice: The actual day will go fast, and things do go wrong- but in the end, it is amazing. I know lots of people say this, but it really is true! Most of the things that went wrong are things that none of the guests will ever know about, and in the end, the important thing is that the bride and groom to-be worked together to create a celebration of family, friends, and their love.

Kristan and Noel took a day out of their very active lives to slow down and celebrate what makes them unique as a couple (besides keeping up with their chocolate lab Roxy, Noel plays ice hockey, baseball, basketball, and snowboards; Kristan enjoys rollerblading, hiking, and surfing!).

Initially, they struggled with their vision for their wedding day decor- they had many ideas but had a hard time making concrete decisions. This is where Some Like it Classic Wedding & Event Design came in! Kristan and Noel hired Amina Michelle to help them focus on the overall look and design for their day.

The beautiful result as described by Kristan: the color palette of purple, charcoal, and ivory created a regal, yet sophisticated ambiance. We incorporated clean, sleek lines throughout our wedding by using a chevron pattern on our invitations, signage, and wedding cake.

3 Words: Sophisticated, Fun, and Memorable

Favorite Memory: We unanimously have to say our “first look” because it was a chance for us to be alone and enjoy each other before all the chaos and excitement of the day and night started.

The Details: We got engaged in Sonoma, California, and wanted to subtly incorporate wine into our wedding. During the ceremony, instead of lighting a unity candle or mixing sand, we exchanged letters to be opened on our anniversary and placed them in a custom-made wine ceremony box with a bottle of Silver Oak, which is our favorite winery.

For the reception, we had custom-made wine bottle labels as the table numbers. The wine bottle labels incorporated the same purple chevron design as the invitations and other signage.

We worked with our Officiant to personalize our ceremony which included stories of how we met, showed our personalities, and described the little things that we love about each other. We wanted to give the impression that our Officiant was a good friend of ours rather than someone we only met a couple of times.

The reception was well-planned and included amenity baskets and personalized signs for the restrooms, a flip-flop basket for the ladies to kick-off their heels, and a live photo booth for our guests to take home a personal keepsake from our wedding. Our guests dined on a meal of filet and salmon while our DJ played up-tempo lounge music rather than jazz or classical music to maintain the unique and fun vibe (who doesn’t like beats while you eats right?).

We included some traditional elements into our reception such as the garter and bouquet toss, and the father-daughter and mother-son dances. For a fun twist on late night snacks, we provided our guests with croissant and english muffin breakfast sandwiches (because who doesn’t like breakfast as a late-night snack?).

The Honeymoon: We spent 6 nights in Maui and stayed at the Sheraton Black Rock on Ka’anapali Beach and island hopped to the Big Island, where we stayed 5 nights at the Fairmont Orchid on the Kohala Coast. We chose Hawaii since we knew it would offer the best balance of relaxation and adventure.

If you could change one thing: {Try} not to stress out too much on the day of the wedding, and {remember} that sometimes you have to relax and improvise. It was the culmination of all of our hard work and we still wanted everything to be perfect. At one point during the day, we looked at each other and came to the realization that no one would even notice if something was out of place, or the MOH’s dress was a different shade of purple, someone from the pool crashing the ceremony, etc. Any of the hiccups that may have happened during that day is what will make it memorable for us.

Notes from the newlywed nest:

Noel is very calm, level-headed, and go-with-the-flow, which is a complete opposite of me (Kristan). Whenever I get worked up or stressed out, he is always there to bring me back to center and put things in perspective. He is my voice of reason, my support system, and my better half.

Kristan is smart, practical, and very meticulous in everything she does. However, she also has a fun, spontaneous side, and is not afraid to let her hair down! My wife is loving, selfless, and puts me and her family before her. Above all else, she makes me who I am and I cannot imagine my life without her.

Kristan and Noel, thanks for sharing your day with us and congratulations!
