Sedona’s Red Rock Canyon National Park provides the most striking backdrop for weddings and engagements and Kayla and Christopher’s destination session, photographed by Elite Circle photographer Fully Alive Photography, is no exception. You’re going to love the simplicity of the shoot and deep connection the couple has.

How They Met: Kayla and Christopher attended the same high school but somehow didn’t cross paths until after college. Kayla tells us: The night we met we were both out at the same local bar (both sober we might add) and after making eyes at one another (or at least Chris thought so) Chris approached me to reintroduce himself as if we were old friends. We hit it off by talking about kitchen design as Chris was remodeling his kitchen and I just happened to be a kitchen designer. When Chris asked me for my business card and I didn’t have any he “smoothly” had me make him a personal one on a sugar packet which we still have framed in our bedroom today.

Favorite Things:

Kayla: My favorite thing about Christopher is how strong of a faith he has. Ever since we started dating, we have read daily devotional together. I love that he can laugh at himself and be silly. But what I love most is his passion. His passion for the people he loves is inspiring.

Chris: To pick just one thing I love about Kay is a difficult task, but if I had to choose just one it would be the way that she loves. Kayla is just a people person in so many ways. People are drawn to her and she has true love for them. Whether it’s the awkward person in the room or her family who for her is second to none she just loves them. Kayla has no idea how beautiful she is but when you add that with her fervent love for others she is the entire package.

The white dress Kayla is wearing was sewn by her grandmother! Kayla explains: The weeks leading up to the engagement shoot, I was looking for an outfit and fell in love with a white dress WITH a train. So I made up my mind then that I had to find one. However, not being able to find anything, I asked my grandma if she could pull something together in less than a week!! After not sewing anything for 30 years, she made the most beautiful dress. The best part was it enabled us to spend time together in the craziness of my wedding planning life. I am so appreciative and thankful for my Grandma’s talent, but more than anything I’m thankful for her love and support.

How did you choose Fully Alive Photography? Tracy is one of Kayla’s cousin’s best friends and while attending college at Illinois State University she spent a little over a year nannying for Tracy’s son. We were already familiar with the quality of Tracy’s work and so the only question was how we could coordinate the location of the shoot with us being in Illinois and Tracy in Arizona. When the idea was brought up about us meeting Tracy out west we jumped at it and couldn’t be happier with our decision. The best thing about Tracy and Fully-Alive is she truly makes you feel like the most beautiful people in the world while she works with you and her talent with her photography makes you almost start to believe her!

Why Sedona? Umm… mountains?! What’s not to like? Where we are from in southern Illinois there is nothing but vast planes running in every direction you look. We wanted something different that stood out for our photos but would also create an awesome memory at the same time. Our shoot was so amazing and more fun than we could have ever imagined taking photos could be.

Ideal Date Night: We are both from design backgrounds, Chris studied architecture and Kayla interior design, and we truly love designing together. We recently purchased our first home together and although it didn’t need much work we have had an amazing time bringing our style into each room. It takes a lot of patience and a ton of trial and error but we wouldn’t have it any other way. So our ideal date would be having an amazing dinner out at any number of Italian Restaurants in St. Louis and then shopping for furnishing for our house (ideally on an unlimited budget;)) and bringing them back home and seeing what works best and then carrying our conversation on for hours about the new ideas we have come up with based on new pieces we have found. If we could mix in some mini-golf we always love that too to keep up our competitive edge!

This engagement session proves you don’t have to do anything over the top in your photos to capture the true spirit of who you are as a couple. Congratulations Kayla and Christopher and thank you for sharing your engagement with us!

Arizona Engagement: Shannon and Owen
categories: Engagement, Sedona

There’s so much to love about Shannon and Owen’s story- where they met, how he proposed, their wedding plans…but first, have  a look see at their sexy little Sedona engagement session from R2 Studio:

Owen proposed on our one year anniversary. We went to a local wine bar called 928 Cuvee (we are huge winos) and split a bottle of wine and some appetizers. While walking back to the car the sun was setting and church bells were tolling in the distance. We were walking through downtown Flagstaff through Heritage Square (right in the middle) and it was surprisingly empty. I was in front of Owen and he grabbed my hand, flung me around toward him and said “I can’t wait another minute to put a ring on your finger.” He proposed (no knee though) and of course I said yes!

What is your favorite thing about each other?

What first drew me to Owen was his optimism and positive outlook on life. And, of course, he is totally hot! Owen appreciates the tomboy in me. When we first started dating he would talk about how he loved that I could hang with the boys but then clean up nicely with a sexy dress and heels.

This outdoorsy couple tries to spend their weekends around water as much as possible: We enjoy fishing and camping on our local lakes, Lake Mary and Ashurst. Clear Creek is one of our favs and we frequent Oak Creek Canyon (where the pics were taken) and Beaver Creek. We took a 2 week road trip last summer through Cali and completely fell in love with Lake Tahoe.

Owen and I first met at the Coconino County Juvenile Court in Flagstaff, not as detainee’s but through work! He was working for the County in the facilities department where he took care of the buildings and I was working with the youth as a Prevention Specialist. We would cross paths every now and then with a slight smile and simple wave. I was actually the one that asked him out first!

I love it when the furry babies make it into e-sessions. This is Aspen!

What drew you to you to R2 Studio?

I had worked with Robin in the past on a local public art project. She started R2Studio and I pretty much stalked them on Facebook. We love their lighting and colors. Robin and Renee are both really chill and easy to work with. They make you feel comfortable and at ease.

Can you tell me any details about your wedding?

The theme is a masquerade and we are hoping everyone gets excited about finding unique and fun masks to wear. I bought a white handmade venetian mask, which is gorgeous. We will also be providing masks for people to wear if interested. I want a lot of color and my bridesmaids (5) will all be in different jewel tones and the groomsmen will have either matching ties or pocket squares to match the dresses. We are getting a photobooth through R2studio as well and the guests will have access to the photos after the wedding and this is our party favor to them. Owen and I also love fish tacos and have made it a goal to try all the fish tacos in Flagstaff at the different restaurants and bars. So, during the cocktail hour we are going to have a fish taco stand with 3 different varieties yet to be chosen. Owen and I both love to dance and are looking forward to sharing our love and joy with friends and family.

Doesn’t this sound like so much fun? Congratulations Shannon and Owen and thank you for sharing your engagement pics with us!

Happy Planning from your Arizona Wedding Blog!

Engagement: Veronica and Ryan
categories: Engagement, Sedona

Sedona is our very close and much cooler neighbor and even though it’s November, Phoenix can still be warm, so Sedona is a perfect option for Summer and early Fall engagement sessions and weddings. Even better, there are wineries in Sedona which of course makes for fabulous engagement shoots and weddings.

Veronica and Ryan’s e-session is  playful and sweet- just how we like it. Oh, and they followed the first rule of engagement sessions: lighten up!

Sedona’s Red Rocks make for a picturesque backdrop

I think you only get green foliage and a creek like this in Sedona…certainly not anywhere in Phoenix that I know of!

I asked Veronica and Ryan a few questions:

KG: How did you meet?

V/R: We met through some mutual friends one night at a local bar in Illinois. Amazingly, we had not crossed paths until that night. I can still remember the outside bar area where we all had gathered for the evening. At one point I noticed a very attractive man sitting across from me. Everyone seemed to be engaged in separate conversations among our friends so I decided to make the first move and grabbed a seat next to him to say hello. Four plus years, 1,800 miles and a hot air balloon ride later we are now embarking on a new journey in our lives together as husband and wife.

KG: What is your favorite thing about each other?

V: My favorite thing about Ryan is the balance and laughter that he brings to my life. Ryan is an amazing man, I can say that I just feel myself when I am with him!

R: My favorite thing about Veronica is she genuinely cares about me, in all aspects. She’s not only going to be my wife, but my rock. Not to mention she is gorgeous too!

(V: Isn’t he sweet?)

KG: What drew you to your photographer?

V/R: What initially drew us to our photographer was the sense of emotion Courtney captures when viewing her photos. What really sealed it for us was our first meeting with her. Ryan and I both feel that the photography is an important aspect of our wedding. As we are not use to having our picture taken, we wanted to select someone we were comfortable with. We wanted a balance of a photographer that will keep the integrity and realness of the photo, but will make sure guidance is provided if we look goofy. We feel Courtney brings these aspects.

KG: How did you decide on the location for your engagement session?

V/R: One of the first dates Ryan took me on was to a winery in Galena, Illinois where we learned about the wine making process, elements to tasting wine and the different types of wine. We wanted to bring an aspect of that to our engagement photos and I had recalled that Sedona had a few wineries. We also wanted to incorporate the area around the Red Rocks in Sedona as it had elements that combined the greenery of the Midwest with the mountainous and desert terrain.

KG: Tell us about your wedding!

V/R: We are getting married next year at the Superstition Mountain Golf & Country Club. We choose this location because it seemed to represent Midwest meets Arizona. There is a gorgeous line of trees as you drive up the pathway to the country club and a beautiful view of Superstition Mountain once you reach the clubhouse. We are most excited to celebrate the union of our families with the friends and family joining us to celebrate our wedding. With both of us being from the Chicago Suburbs, we have a great amount of family and friends that are many miles away so we cherish any time that we share with them as they are a huge factor in our lives.

Many thanks to Courtney Sargent of Courtney Sargent Photography– we loved this e-session!

Congratulations Veronica and Ryan and thank you for sharing your engagement session with us!
